What is the role of a Medical Oncologist?
A Medical Oncologist is a doctor who specialises in diagnosing and treating cancer using chemotherapy, targeted therapy, hormonal therapy, biological therapy and immuno therapy. He is the primary physician for someone who has cancer.
To elaborate:
When one suspects that he may have cancer, the Medical Oncologist will recommend the necessary investigations to diagnose and stage the cancer. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, the Medical Oncologist will recommend and co-ordinate the necessary treatment mode such as surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy. The choice of treatment mode is based on the type of cancer, stage of the disease and other essential criteria such as one’s health status and age. At times, one may require a combination of different modes of treatment at various stages to achieve the best outcome.
How is cancer diagnosed & staged?
Blood tests and radiology tests such as CT scans are often the preliminary tests done. PET scan is done if there is suspicion that the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Biopsy and histology tests would follow to obtain more information about the cancer cells. Tumour genetic profiling is done for some cancers to predict the behaviour of the cancer and its responsiveness to certain cancer drugs.
